The Boutlaws put their best skate forward in 5×5 Championship

A fresh Boutlaws team took to the track on Saturday 23 March for the first round of NSW’s premier roller derby contest, the 5×5 Championship.

Hosted by Outcast Roller Derby (OCD) at the PCYC in Bateau Bay on the NSW Central Coast, Western Sydney Rollers’ (WSR) representative team, The Boutlaws, sidled into town to take on OCD in the Battlegrounds competition.

The Boutlaws’ freshly announced team had a short preparation for the start of the season and experienced the loss of a team member before the game even got going. Footwork specialist, Natty Long Legs was scheduled to play, but was unable to take to the track due to illness.  The Boutlaws put on their big girl derby panties, and rolled on to display their skills on the track.

In the first jam had long time Boutlaws player ‘Newton’s Nightmare’ threw caution to the wind and put on the Jammer star, kicking the bout off with the “maximum effort” attitude that is synonymous with The Boutlaws.

We spoke with trainer and veteran player ‘Houso (aka Sneaky Stackhouse)’ after the bout; “This is a new Boutlaws team. We have some experienced players combining with fresh Boutlaws. This bout highlighted the area we need to work on as a group to strengthen our defensive lines and grow our Jammer skills.”

The combined power of ‘BuzzKill’ and ‘Bad Samaritan’ took on the job of Bench Managers; “The Boutlaws is a dynamic team that feels like extended family. Like all families we can always find areas to improve and from this bout we will look at tightening up our communication style.”

Round 1 did not work in favour of the Boutlaws with the final score WSR 95 vs OCD 170.

Congratulations to the Boutlaws and OCD’s Most Valuable Players (MVP):

  • MVP Blocker WSR – ‘Caustic Collision’
  • MVP Jammer WSR – ‘Crash Test Dolly’
  • MVP Blocker OCD – ‘Gnarly Quinn’
  • MVP Jammer OCD – ‘Desley Snipe’

Thank you to OCD for hosting the spectacular first round of the 5×5 Championship for all of the teams involved.

The next round in the 5×5 Championship for the Boutlaws is on 22 June at Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Stadium, hosted by Northern Beaches Roller Girls.

Thank you to all the supporters, sponsors and fans for being a part of the Boutlaws and Western Sydney Rollers. Connect with us on facebookInstagram and YouTube to keep in touch!

The Boutlaws are bringing it to 5×5 in 2019!

Western Sydney Rollers’ representative team, The Boutlaws will take on the challenge of the 5×5 Roller Derby Championship in 2019.

The 5×5 Championship has three divisions and is THE representative event for roller derby teams in NSW. The Boutlaws will compete in the Battlegrounds division.

This posse of women is the toughest bunch of gals out west, and they’re aimin’ for some straight shooting and hard jamming as they take on the some of the sharpest posses of skater girls around.

Having competed in the tournament previously, 2018 left The Boutlaws wanting more with a mixture of veteran skaters and shiny fresh faces aiming to take out the Championship. The team will be led by experienced Bench Managing duo, Buzzkill and Bad Samaritan.

Stay tuned for The Boutlaws line-up soon!

Skater’s sweet style burns up the track

Jamming and blocking extraordinaire, Natty Longlegs has been weaving her magic on the track since early 2016.

Having seen a poster for Western Sydney Rollers’ intraleague grand final one year, it took Natty a couple of years to pluck up the courage to join – and boy, are we thrilled she did!

Fast forward to 2018 and Natty is burning up the track as part of the Boutlaws, the league’s representative team. It’s proving to be a fantastic year for #11, having attended Camp Skate earlier this year where she got to skate with elite derby coaches. She followed up Camp Skate with an even bigger highlight, playing 5 x 5 with the Boutlaws.

Natty said “It was a little terrifying for my first game back in round two, having broken my ankle in round one in 2017, but we played Maitland and they were a gorgeous team to play against so it was a lot of fun.”

Although she’s not a fan of the travel involved getting to Boutlaws’ games, Natty said the travel is more than outweighed by fun she has playing the games – something she puts down to the team itself.

A massive fan of Lady Trample, Natty’s next derby goal is to perfect the apex jump.

Outside of derby, Natty has a mean green thumb and she’s a cupcake queen – be sure to snap one up at our next game so you can enjoy Natty’s talents on and off the track.
