The Boutlaws put their best skate forward in 5×5 Championship

A fresh Boutlaws team took to the track on Saturday 23 March for the first round of NSW’s premier roller derby contest, the 5×5 Championship.

Hosted by Outcast Roller Derby (OCD) at the PCYC in Bateau Bay on the NSW Central Coast, Western Sydney Rollers’ (WSR) representative team, The Boutlaws, sidled into town to take on OCD in the Battlegrounds competition.

The Boutlaws’ freshly announced team had a short preparation for the start of the season and experienced the loss of a team member before the game even got going. Footwork specialist, Natty Long Legs was scheduled to play, but was unable to take to the track due to illness.  The Boutlaws put on their big girl derby panties, and rolled on to display their skills on the track.

In the first jam had long time Boutlaws player ‘Newton’s Nightmare’ threw caution to the wind and put on the Jammer star, kicking the bout off with the “maximum effort” attitude that is synonymous with The Boutlaws.

We spoke with trainer and veteran player ‘Houso (aka Sneaky Stackhouse)’ after the bout; “This is a new Boutlaws team. We have some experienced players combining with fresh Boutlaws. This bout highlighted the area we need to work on as a group to strengthen our defensive lines and grow our Jammer skills.”

The combined power of ‘BuzzKill’ and ‘Bad Samaritan’ took on the job of Bench Managers; “The Boutlaws is a dynamic team that feels like extended family. Like all families we can always find areas to improve and from this bout we will look at tightening up our communication style.”

Round 1 did not work in favour of the Boutlaws with the final score WSR 95 vs OCD 170.

Congratulations to the Boutlaws and OCD’s Most Valuable Players (MVP):

  • MVP Blocker WSR – ‘Caustic Collision’
  • MVP Jammer WSR – ‘Crash Test Dolly’
  • MVP Blocker OCD – ‘Gnarly Quinn’
  • MVP Jammer OCD – ‘Desley Snipe’

Thank you to OCD for hosting the spectacular first round of the 5×5 Championship for all of the teams involved.

The next round in the 5×5 Championship for the Boutlaws is on 22 June at Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Stadium, hosted by Northern Beaches Roller Girls.

Thank you to all the supporters, sponsors and fans for being a part of the Boutlaws and Western Sydney Rollers. Connect with us on facebook, Instagram and YouTube to keep in touch!

Meet The Boutlaws – Western Sydney Rollers’ 2019 travel team
